Description: Adding a canopy to replace awning.site of work the 1 story house is a l -shaped wood- framed with brick veneer built in 1950. the objective this work will improve the exterior with no changes to the existing structure. changes will be made on the inside corner of the l within the existing footprint of the dwelling. i will replace the awning over the landing with a wood-framed structure creating a covered entry area approximately 5x5 feet. i will alter the direction of snow accumulation and eliminate ice on the landing while creating a beefier canopy. design the design mimics the-low hip canopy commonly employed in l-shaped houses in the 1950s. framing will be covered by inch stock with decorative elements (transom) expected to improve the appearance of the home in a manner fitting the original design. the basic design is copied from 457 parker street in newton ma of which 2 photos are provided. structure the concrete base original to the house and is level without signs of settlement. the existing roof structure is framed with 2 x 8s without any observable faults. photos are provided of the existing site. a 6 x 6 colum will be attached to the base with a simpson standoff bracket or similar. (see front sketch ) the top of the column will be lagged to a 2 x 6 ceiling frame that will tie to the existing structure with joist hangers. (see ceiling sketch). in addition to the 2 x 6 members that rim the ceiling a central member will be added to provide additional rigidity. rafters framing be 2 x 6 stock. a ridge rafter of modest slope will be secured at the existing valley of this l-shaped home. two 2 x 6 plates will secured to the existing roof to which the 2 x 6 jacks will be attached. the jack rafters will be spaced 16 on center. (see rafter sketch). each of the longest jacks will be secured to the 2 x 6 joist shown in the ceiling sketch in order to provide stiffening as shown in the rafter sketch. finishing flashing and ice & snow membrane will be covered by 3-tab shingles matching the existing surface. gutters and downspouts will be attached to the new structure and will terminate in the same place as the current downspout.
