We began working with Tom via Cardinal Real Estate and paid a building deposit on a house for, as the contract stated, "construction of the home." A few days later, it was revealed to us that Tom was involved romantically with the owner of the real estate company. This raised a red flag for us, as it seemed to present a conflict of interests. We also found out that they hadn't been forthcoming with us about other building options that would have better suited our needs (houses with a garage, etc.)
We had already signed a buyer's agency agreement with the company, so we attempted to continue using their services to purchase a different home. However, although only a few days had passed since we mailed our deposit to them, Tom G. Alls refused to refund any of the money, even though clearing of land and construction of the home wasn't close to beginning. Mind you, this house was going to be built anyway, whether they were in contract with us or not, and they'd told us they fully expected that it, like the other houses on the street, would be sold before it was completed. They'd only had the deposit funds for a maximum of two days.
I called Tom to personally address this issue in a calm, collected manner, and in the course of our minute and a half conversation he dismissed our concerns, accused us of having an entitled Millennial attitude, and in annoyance shifted the responsibility to the realtor (his girlfriend, apparently) who had previously thrown up her hands and told us our dispute was only with him because they were unaffiliated "separate entities" (even though they share an office and are dating!) Finally, he hung up on me before we had resolved anything.
Ultimately, we cut our losses and terminated the agreement at our loss. Buyer beware of Cardinal Realty and Tom G. Alls Builder, Inc; they're in cahoots and they'll take your money.
